On a autumnal day where the sky was the photograph above and we had hot cider and fresh doughnuts for breakfast in Massachussets, we stopped into the Barrington Brewery near Great Barrington to buy a "growler". A growler is a 32 oz jug that they pour for you to take home (if you are man enough to be able to carry it).
Having tasted all they had to offer, M and B decided on some Black Bear Stout and got a few slices of stout cake to boot. I'm not a beer drinker, but their stout was chocolatey, coffee-like and downright yummy. The cake was absolutely sublime; fudgey and ridiculously chocolately, like the stout had compounded the chocolateyness of the chocolate (if that's possible). It reminded me of a cake my mum used to make, a chocolate cake with coca cola in it. Obviously you can't taste either the stout or the coke, but something in it makes the chocolate even better.
So I knew when it was Lizz's birthday I had to make a very good cake. Lizz always makes the birthday cakes for everyone, and she does a damn fine job. Seeing as I made the disgusting red velvet cake for her Oscar party, I had to redeem myself. Thank God I did. Recipe is here, and I would encourage any chocolate lover to try it. In fact, I'm going to go and have some right now.
